In baseball and softball, all nine fielders have defined responsibilities and need to move on every play.
Base hit to left field with bases empty, the play goes to second
Play:
| Situation: | Bases empty |
| Offense: | Base hit to left field |
| Defense: | Play goes to second base |
Player Responsibilities:
| Pitcher: | Back up cutoff man (SS) |
| Catcher: | Move to back up position between first and home |
| 1st base: | Check that the runner touches first base and cover first base |
| 2nd base: | Cover second base and receive throw from cutoff man (SS) or left fielder |
| 3rd base: | Covers third base |
| Shortstop: | Moves into outfield to cutoff throw to second base |
| Left: | Fields the ball and throws to second base (or cutoff, if the ball is hit deep) |
| Center: | Back up left field |
| Right: | Back up throw to second base |
| Note: | The throw to the cutoff man only if necessary, otherwise throw directly to second base |
