Baseball Defensive Plays: Base Hit to Left with Bases Empty

In baseball and softball, all nine fielders have defined responsibilities and need to move on every play.

Base Hit to LF with Bases Empty

Play:

Situation: Bases empty
Offense: Base hit to left field
Defense: Play goes to second base

Player Responsibilities:

Pitcher: Back up cutoff man (SS)
Catcher: Move to back up position between first and home
1st base: Check that the runner touches first base and cover first base
2nd base: Cover second base and receive throw from cutoff man (SS) or left fielder
3rd base: Covers third base
Shortstop: Moves into outfield to cutoff throw to second base
Left: Fields the ball and throws to second base (or cutoff, if the ball is hit deep)
Center: Back up left field
Right: Back up throw to second base
Note: The throw to the cutoff man only if necessary, otherwise throw directly to second base
